October Wedding

When Fall arrives, I always think of our friends Rebecca and Alexski's beautiful wedding that we had at Lowfields. It was set up in one of the barns with burlap, gingham, feathers and fruit. And Alexski made all the beautiful signs and chandeliers.    The Long Barn was definitely transformed into a wedding wonderland, when it usually just holds all of our tractors!

A Rough First Day

As if being born wasn't hard enough, how about being born with a broken leg?   Last week we had a newborn calf who had a rough entry into the world.  But we got it taken care of immediately with the help of our wonderful Veterinarian Dr. Bom.

Snuggly Warm on a Winter Day

Who doesn't like to be all snuggly warm on a winter day?  I felt the calves should enjoy the small comfort of a "feather bed"... I had Rolando roll out hay so they could snuggle in and have a bit of extra warmth.

The Glamorous Life of Farming

Under no circumstances is the farming lifestyle a glamorous one... this was brought to mind most especially yesterday when we took to the task of bathing the chickens.  That's right, I said bathing the chickens!   I like to check out each hen and give them a little warm soapy bath to discourage any parasites.   Obviously it's a task that requires a team of help!

Break out the popcorn and snuggle up with a loved one!   Here is some recent video of what really goes on in our day to day here at Lowfields.   I am feeding a newborn twin calf that was rejected from her mother.   She is now thriving due to the fact that we bottle fed her.  Keep in mind we are amateur videographers so hopefully the more we do it, the better we will become!

Special Project: Hay Barn Signage

Owning a farm means there is a constant list of special projects that is always ongoing. Even the littlest special projects, like hanging a sign are a big check off the list.    I got a call that the sign that I had ordered for the hay barn was complete so the guys and Charlie set to the task and it looks great!  It has our logo along with my favorite Shakespeare quote, "Chewing the cud of sweet and bitter fancy".

Apple Season

As it is everywhere else, the Fall season at Lowfields means apples are ripe for the picking!  I have already peeled and frozen dozens of bags of apples for the holiday pies and Cutty's favorite applesauce.  But we aren't the only ones that reap the rewards of this time of year, the cattle do as well.   We have so many fallen apples in the orchard that I like to spoil the girls by feeding them this treat everyday while it lasts.

The Perfect Scrambled Egg

At Lowfields, we have a new way to scramble our free range delicious eggs... the Gordon Ramsey way!  I found this technique online and it truly makes the lightest fluffiest most perfect scrambled eggs you have ever tasted!  You will wonder how you ever ate them without this cooking technique.

served it with some salmon and sausage links - perfection!  

It's that time of year...

It's a wonderful but busy time of year at Lowfields because of all the calves that are arriving daily.   So far we have 8 calves and one set of twins!

Piggyback Pea Chick

Looks like riding piggyback on mummy is the easiest way for this little pea chick to get around.  Our 3  pea chicks are thriving! When Nutmeg's parents visited a couple weeks ago, her dad Bob also shot some great pictures of the chicks.   In the morning I let them out of the cage so they can go on a "walkabout" and eat bugs and grass.  I can't wait for Cutty to see them in a couple weeks!

Makin' Hay

Spring means many things at the farm, but the biggest thing it means is that it's time to make hay.   We use the beautiful weather to cut hay so we will have it for the winter.  Obviously with the mild winter we had, the farm looks lush and green this time of year which makes for great hay!   Refer to an earlier post in August of last year to find out all that goes into making hay, but here are some recent pictures from this week.
